Effective affiliate marketing starts with finding the right niche. As you know, there are thousands of niches out there to choose from.
How to do you make the right decision when it comes to building your first site or making a name for yourself in the niche?
It’s often been said that if you love what you do the money will follow. However, this isn’t always the case in Internet marketing.
Often times the topic that you love isn’t necessarily the most profitable thing to choose for your niche. That leaves you with an important decision – should you focus on money or your passions when you are building an online business?
The most obvious answer would be to focus on the money. There are several pros to going with the solid money makers online.
First of all, you’ll be a lot more likely to turn a profit on your business in a short period of time. If you choose one of the perennial best selling topics, you’ll be able to develop a good stream of income from your site once you have enough traffic coming your way.
Besides the ability to make quick money, you’ll also have a variety of products to choose from when it comes to promotion.
Popular money making niches normally have many different products by different product creators. You can easily set up a product comparison website that compares to the top products in your niche.
No matter what the person ends up choosing from your site, you’ll still end up making money.
Affiliate commissions and Adsense payouts are often more profitable for these niches as well, meaning you’ll get a lot more money for your marketing efforts.
However, going for money niches isn’t always a positive thing. There are some downsides as well.
First, since these niches are very popular there is going to be a lot of competition out there from product creators and other competitors. The market is crowded so that could mean that you are struggling to get traffic and visits to your site.
The market may also have a high threshold for affiliate offers, meaning that they are so used to seeing the same offers over and over again that they aren’t likely to buy from your site if they are promoting the same product.
The people in high competition niches can sometimes be really hesitant to trust the information from a website. They’ve been marketed to so much that their guard is up while they are looking for information on the topic.
On the other side of the decision is to follow your passions. There are a number of benefits that come from following your passions when you are developing your affiliate marketing business.
First of all, there will be a great deal less research involved when developing your content. Since you already know a lot about the topic, you won’t have to spend a lot of time getting to know the market. You are the market so you know exactly what to write or what information needs to be shared.
Working on a niche that you are passionate about can make your business more enjoyable. You’ll look forward to finding new keywords, developing backlinks and researching other sites in your niche because you enjoy the topic itself.
Since the work is enjoyable, you’ll be more likely to get it done. Chances are you’ll get a whole lot farther with a business that involves a topic that you enjoy rather than a business that you have to struggle to work at.
The downsides to going with a niche you are passionate about is that the profit margins can be rather small. You won’t always find products that pay a good commission…or any products at all to begin with.
Once solution to this is using Amazon.com’s or eBay.com’s affiliate programs that pay based on items that people buy from those respective stores.
However, there’s a happy medium that has all the pros of going with money or your passions and eliminates the negatives of both of these options. It’s called finding a happy medium!
If you can find something that makes money AND that you are passionate about, you’ll be able to get the best of both worlds.
To find this, start by brainstorming a list of your favorite topics, hobbies, activities and interests. Then start your keyword and niche research from this point and try to find something that you are both passionate about AND that will make you money.
This way you’ll never have to choose between the two.
